Flight 2017

‘Boarding flight to 2017’

It’s time to say goodbye to 2016, a place of many memories good and bad. The luggage you bring with you contain only the best souvenirs of 2015. Many  experiences you will keep for life. From your failed attempts at haggling the price of happiness to the bags of laughter you found along the way, 2016 is a destination that will forever be engraved in your memory.

But alas, there comes a time to move on from one place to another and now is the time to say goodbye to 2016, a place you can never return as you travel further and further away from it. The memories of 2016 will fade as you make new memories in new destinations there is still 2017, 2018, 2019 and so many more to still see.

2017 promises to be a new haven. There are rumors of pools of happiness, food of friendship, cocktails of health  and beaches of success among other things. 2017 is your next destination so enjoy it.

I wish you all a wonderful time on the paradise island of 2017. I hope that 2017 is everything that you wish it to be and more

To my brother,

I definitely don’t tell you this enough but I’m really grateful that you’re in my life. You were my first best friend and I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you for paving the way for me when we we’re little, for all the advice you’ve given me so I don’t make the same mistakes as you.

Thank you for making me brave.

You always brought the more adventurous side in me. I was always your little shadow, trying to do the things that you used to do even though I was much smaller and younger. Nothing phased me when it came to mimicking my big brother. You definitely had your fun in scaring me when I was younger but I don’t think that will work anymore. Thanks for treating me like the little brother you never had. (more…)

To my parents,

You’ve been there since day one, as life coaches and personal cheerleaders. I just want to say thank you and sorry.

Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. For supporting my dreams, no matter how silly. For constantly encouraging me to conquer obstacles that I always thought we’re impossible. For raising me to be the woman I am today. Thank you. Sorry for being difficult. For disobeying you when I didn’t get my way. For saying hurtful things that I didn’t mean. Sorry.

I think sometimes I neglect telling you how much I appreciate you. It know that at times it doesn’t seem like it, especially since college has started. I have been so busy that I sometimes forget to call, but I love and appreciate you guys more than words can express.

Mom. Thank you for teaching me selflessness. You always put others before yourself. I remember you always making sure everyone was happy before you tended to yourself. I admire you for that. Thank you for teaching me my ABCs and 123s and reading books about how to make your child a genius. Thank you for being strict. For limiting my TV time and making sure I practice piano every morning for an hour before school. Thank you for teaching me how to be independent. For teaching my how to wash clothes so I don’t shrink all of them in the wash and for teaching me how to cook so I don’t starve in college. You are the most beautiful woman in the world and I aspire to become you one day.

Dad. Thank you for teaching me hardwork. For making me clean my room everyday, for making me do work in the garden, for telling me to keep trying. You have taught me that hard work pays off and that I should never put a cap on my capabilities. Thank you for teaching my how to ride a bike and how to drive a motorcycle. You have taught me to keep trying even if I get a few cuts and bruises. Thank you for yelling at me, because you always seem to know when I need it the most.

Mom and dad, I strive to have a relationship like yours. A relationship always has ups and downs and yet you guys have rode it like a rollercoaster. Taking each day like a new adventure. As individuals you are strong but together you are unbreakable. Your love is natural and comes so easily and I cannot help but be impatient for the time that I will have something like that. You both have taught be so much about the importance of love and family and I will forever keep these things close to my heart.

Thank you for filling everyday with love. I am so privileged to have the both of you in my life. You have provided me with the best life possible and I hope that you are proud of how I have turned out.

I love you both so much,

Your little girl

To my crush,

Where do I even begin? I guess its pretty obvious that I like you. But apparently I have done well enough for you to not find out about how I feel. But yeah, I like you. I don’t really know when or how it happened. It just did. I remember when I first met you. It seems like a lifetime ago. And maybe it was, but the memory is forever engraved in my mind.

You were one of the cool kids. Well at least that was my first impression. You had this vibe about you that just radiated “better than you”. Maybe it was because I was new and I was in unfamiliar territory but you terrified me. More so than the others you hung out with. But honestly, that just made me more interested in you. And it didn’t really help that you were also very good looking. Tall, athletic, you had it all. Maybe that is what intimidated me. You were perfect.

Fast forward to today and my impressions of you have completely changed. Years of teasing and jokes have made me see you for who you really are: a complete goofball. You make the stupidest jokes and you love making people laugh. I can’t even see you as intimidating anymore because you are the friendliest person I know. You’re still good looking, I can’t deny that. But you’re not perfect, but I guess no one is.

Anyways, I know I am that annoying girl that leads myself on more than you do. I sometimes imagine what it’d be like if we we’re to actually have a relationship. The adventures we’d go on, the pictures we’d take. I don’t know why I do it, but it just happens. I enjoy being around you whether we’re talking for hours or sitting in silence. I just want to know that I’ll always be there for you through the bad relationships you go through and the crazy parties you throw. If you need me I’ll be a phone call away.

Have I ever told you any of this? Nope. And I probably never will. What we have now is enough for me.

So here’s to the guy that makes my heart go wild whenever I see him, the guy that I have written many poems about, the guy that makes me smile whenever I think of him. I hope you will continue to be in my life forever and always.

From the bottom of my heart,

To my best friend,

I believe everything in life happens for a reason. But sometimes I wonder how I got lucky enough to be able to call you my best friend. We haven’t seen each other in a while, I just wanted to tell you that I am thinking of you and I just wanted to tell you how much I love you.

As I grow older, I learn that it is easy to lose sight of your friends as your life takes you to new places and new experiences. But with you, it’s never really been a question. I always know that I can count on you to be there for me. People say that if your friendship has lasted for 8 years then it’ll last a lifetime, so I guess we’re stuck with each other.

So what I really wanted to say is thank you. Thank you for making me laugh at the most inappropriate times and places.

Thank you for accepting me for who I am. Weirdness and all. You are one of the only people I can be myself with because I know you won’t judge me in anyway.

Thank you for listening to my complaints. I complain a lot and you never seem to be bothered by it. Instead you just listen to me until I run out of steam. No matter how silly the complaint you will give me your undivided attention because you know that I just need someone to listen. Without you I think I might have gone crazy.

Thank you for voluntarily spending time with me. I know I can be crazy, annoying and just be a complete pain in the ass sometimes. You seem to accept me for who I am, no questions asked. You know when to give me some space and when to smother me with love. You understand that sometimes a girl just needs to spend a whole day watching movies, eating ice cream and lip syncing to her favourite songs.

Thank you for knocking some sense in me. I can be difficult sometimes. Especially when you tell me something I don’t want to hear. Thank you for telling me that “I am better than him” and that “That shirt is really ugly”. Honestly, without you I don’t know how’d I’d function in society.

I need you to know that I am your biggest cheerleader. I will cheer you on when something good happens in your life and I’ll also be there pushing you to keep going when you’re down. I just want you to know that rain or shine I’ll always be there for you because you are my other half. The yin to my yang. The peanut butter to my jelly. The salt to my pepper. You get what I mean.

My future is full of the unknown, like “Where I’ll live?” and “Who will I marry?” But of the few things that I am certain of, I know that you’ll be by my side. I have reserved a place for you at my wedding that may or may not happen.

You radiate beauty inside and out and I really hope that every person has someone like you in their lives.

I love you.

Open Letters challenge,

in which I will write an open letter everyday for 30 days to a different individual. Hopefully this challenge will help me out in two ways.

Firstly, I want to actually complete the challenge. Being a person that hardly ever carries on anything I have decided to try and challenge myself to blog every single day for 30 days. I would hardly call myself a perfectionist. I am however, a wannabe-perfectionist. A simple way to put it is that I like to portray myself as having a perfect life. So if I am not perfect at something I just completely drop it until I can build up the courage to try it again.

Secondly, I am really terrible and I mean terrible at expressing my feelings. I literally can’t share emotions without cringing a little. I don’t know why, but I just do. So I thought by taking part in this challenge I’ll be able to open up a little more. Just put my feelings out into the unknown internet universe.

The idea of this challenge is to not be perfect. I will post something everyday even if it rushed, unfinished or short.

I hope you enjoy my 30 day challenge and maybe it’ll inspire you.

College 101: Freshman Year

We all know that being the ‘new kid’ sucks, but there is an exception to every rule. Being new is great in your first year of college/university and that’s because there will be hundreds of other kids that are in the same boat as you.

Everyone else is fresh meat too.

As a freshman, being clueless is absolutely fine and that is amazing. You can ask so many questions without being judged. “Where is this building?”, “Where’s the best place pick up lunch?”, “Who has the best parties?” No question is out-of-bounds. So, those of you that’ll be starting college/university in the new year don’t stress out about it. No one is judging you for not knowing anything. Just go with it and you’ll be fine.

As the 2015/2016 academic year comes to a close I have decided to celebrate the end of my first year in college by providing a list of things I wish I knew about freshman year.

1. Go out on random week nights

As a fresher, it if basically an obligation to enjoy your first year in university. Especially if you go to university in the UK and your first year ‘doesn’t count’ and all you have to do is just pass your exams you have no excuse not too. So if your friends decide they want to go out on a Tuesday, GO. And make sure you don’t miss out on sports nights, those are mad.

 2. Don’t stay stuck in high school

You’re not in high school anymore kiddo, no one really cares about what grades you got or what subjects you did. They care about the moment. Typical question you will get asked in freshers week usually consist of “What’s your name?” ” Where are you from?” “What course are you doing? ” “What halls are you in?” etc.

Its okay to talk about home friends once in a while and what you used to do, but don’t get stuck in the past. Move forward, make new memories.

3. Always use student discounts

Honestly, take advantage of them. You don’t be a student forever, and with a student budget, these discounts may just get you through another week.

4. Go to office hours

I literally cannot stress this enough. Go through your lectures and anything you don’t understand GO AND SEE YOUR LECTURER. Honestly, it could save you the hassle from trying to get in contact with them right before exams. I know this cause I’m in that exact situation right now.

5. Always carry a phone charger

You honestly never know when it could come in handy. There are times where you end up staying in the library late and if you need to get in contact with someone and your phones dead, it’s really annoying.

6. Don’t buy textbooks before the first week of class

Firstly because you might not need all the textbooks on your reading list. Lecturers will usually tell you which book they think is most useful, so get those ones.

Also, don’t just go buying the textbooks. Go to the library and check if they have copies there, cause it saves you a ton of money.

7. Get along with your flatmates

By all means, this doesn’t mean you have to like them but you WILL be living with them for a year. So at least make an effort to at get along.

8. Try to not skip too many classes

I beg you. Firstly, because it becomes a habit. Secondly, because it gets pretty hard to catch up once you start missing them regularly. Just go to classes, it’s not that hard

9. Don’t miss out of free food

Living on a student budget means that sometimes you may have a lack of food, either because you’re low on cash or you’re too tired to get any, so free food is your holy grail.

10. Make your room yours

You’ll be living in your room for at least a year, so at least make it yours. Living in a room that feels temporary is never good. By jazzing up your room and making it yours makes it feel more homely and you’re less likely to feel very homesick.

11. Don’t underestimate your workload

You may think you’re only a fresher and you don’t have much work but do I have news for you. First year is when they try to get everyone at the same level and therefore means that there is A LOT of work.

12. Get out of your comfort zone

University is a time for you to try new things. Go to freshers fair and join as many societies as you like. Sign up for things that you like but also remember to try something new like windsurfing or pottery. Societies are a great way to learn something new but to also meet new people.

13. Call your family

They get on your nerves sometimes but it’s natural to get homesick when you first move into university. Don’t be embarrassed to admit it, it’ll happen to everyone. Make sure to call/text/email your family to update them on your life. I will guarantee that your family miss you just as much as you miss them.

14. Buy a mattress pad

You’ll thank me for this later. A comfy bed goes a long way
